Two South Wales Police officers have been taken to hospital after a stolen car rammed their marked vehicle.

One officer suffered a serious back injury after police believe the yellow Skoda Octavia was driven deliberately into a BMW police car at Neath Abbey on Tuesday.

The officers were freed by firefighters using cutting equipment and they were taken to Morriston Hospital, Swansea.

The incident happened at 23:25 BST near St Matthews Church, said police.

The driver of the Skoda left the scene on foot and was seen running in the direction of nearby Bryncoch.

The Skoda, which is being forensically examined, was reported stolen from Llansamlet on Sunday, while the registration plates, WU58 OVK, were stolen from the Pontypridd area the day before.

Police believe the vehicle could have been involved in burglaries in the Neath and Swansea areas since the weekend.

Det Insp David Hough of Neath Port Talbot CID said: "The yellow Skoda was driven from Junction 43 of the M4 and along various roads in the Llandarcy, Skewen and Neath Abbey before becoming involved in the collision with the police car.

"We believe the car was driven deliberately into the police vehicle which has left one officer with a serious back injury.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have seen the distinctive yellow coloured Skoda Octavia in the Swansea or Neath area at any time up to the time of the incident on Tuesday night to come forward.

"The driver made off from the scene on foot in the general direction of Bryncoch and we are appealing to anyone with information about this individual to contact the police."
