It is ludicrous to put more police on the streets and expand court sittings when there are now 25% fewer prosecutors than only three months ago! Who is going to prepare the case and secure the conviction? Until the prosecution is perfected the criminal has every opportunity to escape justice. To pour more defendants into an underfunded, demoralised & reduced CPS is to pour a quart into a pint pot!

Locking them up costs us MORE money! There are so many projects, of a simple nature, that need taking care of, yet funding is not there to pay for it. Put these people to work, let them pay for their crimes and "work" them off. It should teach them responsibility at least. Better than fining them, they have nothing to pay with! They may think twice before destroying anything in future.

Judging by those sentences I have read so far, we are back to the the pat-on-the-back approach. When I was magistrate not that long ago, my colleagues and I handed down sentences harsher than any of these for less serious offences. Equally, I have seen offenders with record sheets as long as one's arm made to pay paltry fines, laughing and walking away to re-offend. It's time to get real.

You either want solutions or revenge. By all means kick people out of their council houses (although a lot were privately housed), withdraw their benefits, but don`t think for a second this will make things better, because it won`t. It will have the opposite effect. What you will see is an underclass more angry and more willing to make thier voices heard and more ready to use violence.

If as it now appears that a lot of the trouble was gang organised does Cameron honestly believes that banning hoods and facemasks will make any difference to those that looted? It's beginning to look as if he really is totally divorced from reality. It's all very well bringing in all these measures but who is going to enforce it if police numbers are cut?
